Well, according to a study conducted by the Mountaintop Technologies of Johnstown, Penn in association with the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center shotgun slugs are way more prone to ricochets in comparison to rifle bullets. Because of this fact, the shotgun slugs can and will travel farther than rifle bullets in most common hunting situations.

When the shots are fired while holding guns level at 3 feet off the ground, a shotgun slug will travel 0.99 of a mile which is 16% farther than a .30-06 common rifle bullet in regular circumstances. The main reasons for this is that the slugs tend to hold together better and lose less energy during ricochets in comparison with rifle bullets. So, as a conclusion, slugs travel farther than rifle bullets.
