Hunting Rifle Scopes
Using a rifle scope is a common situation these days and the rifle scope market is getting bigger and bigger that is why before choosing a rifle scope, the buyer must do a little research and find out which scope is the most suitable for his rifle. Rifle scopes are available in just about any configuration of power and size a hunter can imagine. The most common scope is the very popular 3x-9x with a 1” tube with varying sizes of the front objective lenses. Some of the scopes models have an adjustable objective also known as the AO which plays an important part in correcting for parallax at different ranges.
The reasons why people use scopes are many, one of them is that some older people can’t focus their eyes on the iron sights like they did when they were younger and using a scope will eliminate this inconvenient. Another reason would be that some hunting activities impose for a very efficient look at the game and the magnification advantages offered by scopes will help the hunter get a better look.
Choosing the proper scope can be a difficult thing to do but with a little documentation nothing is impossible. For just about all hunting situations, a 3x scope is plenty low even at a close 10 yard shot the hunter is able to see plenty of the critter in the scope lenses. Choosing a scope depends greatly on the hunting terrain and the distance from which the hunter will make the shot. A 9x scope is in most cases plenty high for zooming in on far game at decent ranges. Anything that is above 12x is totally unnecessary (at least in our opinion).
When choosing the right scope, a hunter must assess its needs and decide whether he needs the relatively low price of a scope or the flexibility of a variable-power scope which comes at a bigger price. Speaking of price, you literally get what you pay for, a less expensive scope won’t be very accurate and efficient even if you have a very expensive rifle and ammo, the reverse situation is also valid, even if you own a very expensive scope installed on a very cheap rifle you won’t get the desired results. A good scope is between 200$-250$ but this isn’t the limit because you can spend for a scope even thousands of dollars, totally unnecessary in our opinion because at the 250$ range you can get high quality scopes that will do the job right.
One of the most debated characteristics of a scope is the size of the objective or shortly put, the lens. The larger objective will gather more light thus creating a brighter view especially in a low-light environment. The larger the objective means, the higher the scope must be installed on the rifle and this will create a higher line of sight making the shooting position more awkward. The adjustable objective of a scope will allow better focus at a variety of ranges but requires serious adjustment depending on how far the distance is from you and the target.
All things considered, there is no such thing as the best scope because when choosing a scope a hunter must take into consideration many factors, like the rifle, ammo and many others. The trick is to find the most suitable scope for your gun and ammo that will do a good job for you (without spending your entire paycheck).
