Efficient Small Game Rifle ?

So, I want to buy an efficient small game rifle. But which one? As the market is filled with alternatives. I will not hunt anything big, only small-sized animals = birds/small mammals. Do not recommend me air rifles because I just hate them, don't ask why  Simply put, I want something accurate in a short distance - simple as that. I highly appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks.

Ruger 10/22 is a good first choice.... About $180... What do you think?

I'd have to choose the 17 Remington as it is very economical to shoot, fast bullet and by adding a decent scope, the efficiency is quite impressive for a limited budget.

rim fire such as 22 topped with an inexpensive scope. Any of the major brands offer great accuracy as long as you break the barrel in right. Want bigger..center fire.17 rem, 22 hornet, .223, 220 swift, depends on what you define as small game. If that includes predetors like fox or yotes then something in a centerfire makes sense. Just remember, anything bigger than a .22 is going to carry a longer distance, aiming up at a squirrel or bird means the bullet is going to go somewhere way out there.

Anything bigger than 22 is overkill. What others suggested should do it.

I'd have ta go with the .17 HMR, it's very accurate at a short distance and will take down up 2 fox at a short distance with a chest or head shot :)
