For quite awhile now semi-auto rifles that were cosmetically similar to military rifles have been shunned as having no sporting purpose, many of us knew otherwise. To call these fine firearms “assault rifles” is a complete misnomer as well. A real assault rifle by definition is what is called select fire, meaning capable of firing more than one shot with each rigger pull (either full -auto or burst).

Right now the AR15 (Based off the M16 rifle) platform is becoming common place, and is being touted as a hunting rifle, why?

Because they are versatile, with one lower receiver group you can change the upper to various calibers and configuration with, most of the time just popping two pins and switching the upper receiver group.

Calibers that can be used in just one platform range from .22 long rifle all the way up to .50bmg, including pistol calibers as well. Calibers that can be utilized, that were found with a  quick search are .22lr, 9mm, .45acp, .40S&W, 5.7×28, 7.62×39, 5.56, 6.8spc, .223, 5.45×39, .450 thumper, .458 SOCOM, .204, .300 whisper, just to name a few. By going with the larger lower receiver group you can go with .243, .308, 7mm-08 and more including short magnums.

They are accurate, AR15 varmint guns are know to shoot sub MOA groups with no problems, some manufacturers have sub ½ moa performance guarantees. The new Remington R-25 recently reviewed as shooting 1.5” groups with common hunting ammo.

They are reliable, the system itself has undergone many modifications and revisions since its early days, and the modern AR is a fine system. The recent advent of piston driven systems such as Rugers new rifle, plus conversions and other brands of complete uppers have in some people’s opinions made a already good system even better.

They are very customizable; they can be configured from a heavy barreled varmint rig to a close range hog gun and everything in between. They can use most any optic from red dots to scopes, stocks and forearms can be custom chosen to the user.

Easy to maintain. Break down and maintenance is pretty easy as well, a recent video showed a 11 year old girl take one down in about 15 seconds.

Price wise they can range anywhere from about $650 and up.

They are perfectly legal to hunt with in Michigan as well, just make sure you have a 5 round magazine for deer.
