Guys and gals in camouflage green and fluorescent orange will likely be the norm here and across the state as big game rifle hunting season in Colorado gets underway this weekend.
The first rifle season for elk only begins Saturday, Oct. 10, and continues through Wednesday, Oct. 14. Licenses were by drawing only.
Two combined rifle seasons for deer and elk are scheduled for Oct. 17-25 and Oct. 31-Nov. 6.
Deer licenses for these two seasons were by drawing only, however, over-the-counter licenses are available for elk.
Locally, over-the-counter licenses can be purchased at Westcliffe Super Market; Antler Liquor and General Store; Valley Ace Hardware and Conoco/Country Store.
The fourth rifle season for elk only begins Nov. 11 and continues through Nov. 15. Licenses are by drawing only.
Due to various changes in regulations, the Colorado Department of Wildlife recommends all hunters obtain a Big Game hunting brochure.

The free brochure can be picked up where over-the-counter licenses are sold and at the U.S. Forest Service office located on the corner of Main Street and Hermit Lane in Silver Cliff. It is also available on the Colorado DOW website.
Hunters are also reminded they are responsible for hunting in the proper game management units.
In Custer County, those GMUs are 86 and 691, which are in the Sangre de Cristo region, and 69 and 84, which are in the Wet Mountain region.
Also, remember hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
Lastly, to purchase a hunting license, all hunters born on or before Jan. 1, 1949, must present a hunter safety card.
